About Habitot Childrens Museum
Description:
Habitot is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization that relies on tax-deductible donations for its existence. Admissions, memberships and other earned revenue cover only half of operational costs. Habitot Children's Museum was founded
by parents and educators in 1992 to meet the unique needs and interests of infants, toddlers and preschoolers in a safe and appropriate community setting. Habitot opened its first facility in downtown Berkeley in 1998, after six years of community outreach and fundraising. Habitot Childrenbs Museum has become the most popular and award-winning childrenbs museum in the East Bay. Habitot founders have created a hands-on play and learning center where young children are the bbig kidsb -- exploring the arts and culture in a safe setting designed for especially small hands and bodies and growing minds. Our vision for an expanded home for Habitot Childrenbs Museum Today, Habitot is at a crossroads. Our rented, basement-level museum in downtown Berkeley is filled to capacity and there is no room to grow. The need is great for a larger, more enriching museum to serve families with young children. To fulfill its vision, Habitot must find a new home. Habitotbs board of directors is actively working toward moving the museum into its own larger, stand-alone facility in the next three to five years. We estimate that it will cost five to seven million dollars to secure and build out the new museum. Our Mission Early Childhood Learning and Parenting Success Habitot Children's Museum is the East Bay's award-winning hands-on discovery museum for very young children. Over 600, 000 people have enjoyed the museum's interactive exhibits, art programs and classes since its opening in 1998. More than a place to entertain young children, Habitot provides resources and support for early childhood learning, parenting success, and community connection. Habitot's Family Outreach Program brings over 10, 000 low-income and at-risk children into the museum every year. Low income family participation exceeds 12% of audience though active teen parent, caregiver support and diverse family programs. Free admission days welcome over 7, 000 visitors. The mission of Habitot Childrenbs Museum is to nurture and enrich the lives of young children, their families, and the adults who care for them by providing an environment for early childhood learning and exploration, parenting education, and community outreach. Core Values Creativity, discovery and curiosity are cultivated through hands-on exhibits and programs which foster a passion for lifelong learning Children and the adults most important in their lives -- parents, teachers, and caregivers -- need child development knowledge, parenting support and places to come together in shared interaction and dialog with other adults caring for children Wholesome, safe and welcoming environments build inclusive communities by supporting families, enhancing educational opportunities and creating shared vision Creating a sense of belonging for children and families in their communities is at the heart of social capital Our goal is to help all young children reach their potential - by interacting with engaging, hands-on exhibits, by experiencing creative programs, by fostering parent involvement and by providing diverse social opportunities
