Welcome to the third oldest Children's museum in the nation the Detroit Public Schools' Childrens Museum, is a non-profit institution designed especially for children, families and adults. With a history dating
back
to
1917.
the
Children's
Museum
began
as
a
joint
venture
between
the
Detroit
Board
of
Education
and
the
Museum
of
Art.
It
was
noted
as
a
"Museum
within
a
Museum".
A
three
part
program
of
services
was
developed
featuring
classes
at
the
Museum,
loan
collections
for
schools
and
children's
activities
after
school,
on
Saturdays
and
on
vacation
days.
In
1925,
the
Detroit
Board
of
Education
assumed
responsibillity
for
the
Museum.
Since
then,
the
Museum
has
developed
into
a
unique
educational
and
cultural
institution,
expanding
its
collections
and
activities
to
include
all
subject
areas
of
the
curriculum.
The
galleries
at
the
Children's
Museum
feature
various
exhibitions,
which
explore
the
sciences,
history,
world
cultures
and
the
arts.
Lessons
and
programs
are
presented
in
the
museum
classrooms
and
galleries.
A
popular
feature
is
the
Planetarium,
one
of
the
first
to
be
established
within
the
Cultural
Center.
As
poineers
in
offering
diverse
programming,
collection
items
and
service,
the
museum
presents
thousands
of
activiteis
for
school
groups,
youth
families
and
adults
each
year.
Today,
it
is
one
of
the
most
unique
educational
and
cultural
institutions
devoted
to
simulating
the
intellectual
curiosity
and
natural
love
of
learning
among
Metropolitan
Detroit's
youth,
families
and
adults.
