Josephine E. Holmes, a teacher at Mt. Holyoke, for whatever reason, visited New London prior to the summer of 1933 and decided, that New London would be the perfect setting for
giving
her
students
an
opportunity
to
do
plays
in
the
summer
time.
It
was
with
this
simple
reasoning
and
plan
that
the
New
London
Players
came
into
existence
in
the
summer
of
1933,
and
the
facilities
of
the
New
London
Town
Hall
were
used.
The
history
of
the
Barn,
if
done
thoroughly
and
justly,
would
include
so
many
names
that
a
book
would
be
more
appropriate
than
just
an
article,
but
the
GOLDEN
GALA
event
on
June
10
and
11
of
1983
at
the
New
London
Town
Hall
stood
as
a
testimonial
of
former
Barn
Players,
including
those
as
recent
as
1982
to
believe
it
or
not
1933.
Ms.
Doris
Furnside,
a
Mt.
Holyoke
student
who
appeared
in
the
1933
New
London
Players
production
of
FINDERS
KEEPERS
at
the
New
London
Town
Hall,
returned
not
only
to
help
the
New
London
Players
in
their
Jubilee
celebration
but
to
take
on
an
acting
assignment:
a
role
in
the
1983
New
London
Barn
Players
production
of
FINDERS
KEEPERS.
Owner/Producer
Emeritus
Norman
Leger
has
logged
his
50th
year,
celebrated
his
retirement
and
made
his
farewell
performance
in
the
final
2004
season
production
of
bThe
Rainmakerb.
"I'm
very
proud,
of
course,
of
the
kids
who
go
on
to
do
'great
things'"
the
producer
thinks
to
himself,
"but
what
I
really
take
pride
in
is
how
the
Players
feel
about
the
Barn
and
about
each
other.
When
they
leave
they
take
some
of
the
Barn
with
them,
and
they
keep
it
for
years
and
keep
in
contact
with
each
other.
It
is
an
inexplicable
spirit,
a
fantastic
bonding,
which
can
only
be
understood
by
those
who
have
experienced
it.
That
is
what
it
is
about.
That
is
where
pride
truly
lies."
Today,
as
in
1933,
there
are
no
stars,
no
underlings,
no
"specials",
just
a
talented
group
of
people
with
a
common
bond
of
putting
on
the
best
shows
possible
who
come
together
for
one
memorable
summer
(or
more)
and
take
something
from
New
London
with
them
in
September
-
for
the
rest
of
their
lives.
