History
Victory
ships
and
their
venerable
predecessors,
Liberty
ships,
were
critically
important
to
the
wartime
effort.
The
U.S.
Merchant
Marine
(USMM)
played
a
major
role
in
winning
the
war
on
both
the
European
and
Pacific
fronts.
The
Merchant
Marine
was
responsible
for
transporting
fully
85%
of
the
troops,
ammunition
and
supplies
used
to
support
Allied
war
effort
during
World
War
II
and
is
credited
with
contributing
decisively
to
the
ultimate
Allied
victory.
This
success,
however,
came
at
great
human
cost.
The
USMM
suffered
more
loss
of
life
by
percentage,
than
any
branch
of
armed
service.
The
USMM
and
the
U.S.
Navy
Armed
Guard,
which
manned
the
guns
on
Victory
and
other
merchant
ships,
are
truly
the
forgotten
heroes
of
WW
II.
These
ships
also
contributed
greatly
to
the
growth
of
the
nation
as
a
world
economic
superpower
following
WW
II.
Additionally,
they
played
a
significant
role
during
the
Korean
War
and
the
Vietnam
Conflict,
by
supplying
cargo,
fuel
and
military
equipment
and
ammunition
to
these
areas
and
by
ferrying
refugees
from
war-torn
countries
to
new
lives
in
the
United
States.
Construction
of
the
SS
American
Victory
was
completed
on
June
20,
1945,
at
the
California
Shipyard
in
Los
Angeles,
California.
She
sailed
the
Pacific
Ocean
during
the
waning
days
of
World
War
II,
supplying
Americanbs
war
effort
and
assisting
in
ferrying
military
equipment
and
war-weary
GIs
back
to
the
States.
After
the
war,
the
SS
American
Victory,
under
the
auspices
of
the
Marshal
Plan
and
the
United
Nations,
plied
the
oceans
of
the
world
delivering
foodstuffs,
manufacturing
machinery
and
raw
materials
to
countries
devastated
by
the
destruction
caused
by
World
War
II.
During
the
Korean
War
and
the
Vietnam
Conflict,
the
SS
American
Victory
and
other
merchant
ships
transported
cargo,
fuel
and
ammunition
to
these
areas
from
ports
in
the
United
States
and
all
over
the
world.
